Problem with Murray lawnmower not starting?
Question:its a 7-22651 Murray self-propelled older model, put new gas in the tank & checked the oil, but it still wont start. We got it off craigslist for free and they said it worked fine, but they were obviously lying just to get rid of it.. any ideas on if it could be a simple fix?
Answers:
Try a spark plug, if that don't work try a carburetor kit.
Take the bowl off the carberator and see if there is gas in it. If there is not needle is stuck. Needle is operated by float and gravity. When fuel level falls float falls opening needle vavle. If there is no gas in bowl remove carberator and then bowl. Take off float and pull out needle. Clean with B12 and reinstal in reverse and it should get gas and start.
If gas is not the problem then check firing. Plug could be corroded or fouled which is easy to check by removing it. Get your husband to hold plug wire and attempt start. He'll know if its firing;^) If not check points.
I would bet it is a stuck needle in carberator. This can happen when old gas is left in over winter or longer.
Clean the carbuerator. If it set for a long time with gas in it and then was started, the gas was porb. all gummed up and gummed up the carbuerator. Same thing happened to my rider after 2 years. Now I put a fuel satbilzer in every Fall after the last mow, or just drain the tank. A new plug wouldn't hurt either.
It's either fuel or spark or air.
New spark plug, new gas, new air filter, clean carburetor, check fuel lines, check for spark when starting engine.
take it apart and look in the gas take sometimes debris in there will be the problem. And remember you get what you pay for!
you can also try a spray starting fluid.. open the carborator and spray a little inside.. you can purchase it at any auto store like Trac Auto or home depot.. I had the same problem with mine and this seems to work everytime.
