What type of grass is recommended in very dry areas?

Question:

Answers:
Your best bet will be grass that grows in very dry areas. The more important question is what soil type is it for? For example, the sawgrass that grows in the sandy soil in Florida will not survive in the clay-like soil of the northeast and vice-versa.

See this chart, though:

Hope this helps.

I would go with a native grass. They grew and thrived in your area and your climate long before running water and sprinklers came to the area. Your county or state exension office should be able to tell you what varieties of grass are both native to your area and make for a nice turf.

Water isn't the only thing to keep in mind. Is it for full sun, partial shade, or full shade? Some grasses will simple die without full sun. Also, how cold does it get there in the winter? Some grasses will not winter over well and you'll have die off every year. Bluegrasses are very cold tolerant, for example.

As for dry climate grasses, look into fescues, buffalograss, and zoysia. Keep in mind, some of the more hardy types of grass will turn brown over the winter but green up every spring. Some people don't like having a brown yard in the winter, but if you get a lot of snowfall, then it may be a moot point as it will be covered in white all winter.
