Have been landscaping for many years.

First, the area needs to be excavated to a depth of at least 8 inches to as much as 24 inches, depending on weather conditions in your area. Then, you need to add 2Amodified stone, or something similar, to fill it in. Tamp it well. After that, you need to add sand, or screenings, (and fabric to help stop settling). Place the bricks, or stone, on top of the firmly tamped sand, (make sure it is leveled correctly, don't want the water to drain towards the house!) then you also have to tamp down the bricks.

If you are not sure of what you are doing, I would consult with a local landscaping contractor. It's not as easy as it looks, and while anyone can lay bricks, it takes experience to make it last for years. I have several contacts in PA, but not sure where you are located. Don't try to talk to someone at one of the big "home improvement stores" because they are not that knowledable about this subject. Try local stone / brick dealers, they will help you!
