What can you put in outdoor water spaces such as wading pools or birdbaths to inhibit mosquito growth?
Question:I've heard of a tablet of some sort that you can put in outdoor water fixtures to inhibit mosquito eggs from developing, but I don't know what it is called or where to get it. And I prefer it to be animal safe. Anyone know?
Answers:
There is an organic Mosquito dunk with Bti
Only thing it affects is mosquito larva
I'm from florida, get rid of it. never have anything that has standing water sit around. Are you crazy?
They are called "mosquito dunks" and they are available at most garden supply stores.
Don't know of any tablets, but just change the water daily. Fresh water leaves no time for mosquitos to develop, and is much better for the animals who use it.
Once in awhile, clean your birdbath with bleach and water, but make sure it is really rinsed off well before you refill it.
Also, a pump that keeps the water moving is better. Leaving standing water in a mosquito area is not a good idea in any way.
If it is a swimming pool, then you need to go for a chemical designed for the pool. For a non-toxic solution get something that keeps the water moving. The mosquitoes prefer stagnant water for laying their eggs. Otherwise, Whatever works catalog has a lot of different products.

I don't know if this would work but what if you made the pool a salt water one by adding bags of table/sea salt. Don't mosquitos like fresh water? Just a thought, and a cheap alternative?
Not sure about bird baths but in wadepools put about two cap fulls of bleach it will kill them and stop them from breeding .also clean pool about onces a week
I don't know about tablets, but mosquitos only lay in standing water. You could put a little fountain in your pool or birdbath. Birds enjoy playing in the water, too, and mosquitos won't lay eggs in it because it's moving.
I called my local mosquito abatement district recently to request some "mosquito fish" (Gambusia affinis) for my 100-gallon pond, which they supplied and delivered for free. Your area may have a similar program in place. It shouldn't be too difficult to locate the right phone number using Google.
Lowes sells the tablets you speak of; see the link below. I don't know if they're toxic to other animals.
just a few drops of oil will work
