How do we fix yellowing lawn and foxtail palms?

Question:We live in the tropicsand have clay soil, in a new estate, where most of the palms in our street have gone yellow. our new lawn has also gone yellow. we have been told nitrogen, but what i the best way of applying it?

Answers:
There are so many reasons a lawn can turn yellow especially depending on the type of grass, but the fact that you live in the tropics and the fact that its June makes me suspect disease caused by excess dew or humidity. In the early morning, check for dew on the lawn and then check the area where the yellow is transitioning to healthier green. If you see cobwebby filaments, then you have a fungus. If the individual blades of grass have something fuzzy growing on them, you definitely have a fungus. Fungus, believe it or not, can be treated with a solution of cornmeal soaked in warm water. You then spray the solution on the grass and plants and the sugars growing in the cornmeal water will attract the beneficial bacteria that control the bad fungi. Cornmeal solution is also a nice fertilizer too.

If there is no sign of fungus, then it is likely a nutritional deficiency. If the grass and palms look healthy, but are just yellowing, then it could be an iron or potassium or magnesium deficiency.

As for the palms, there are palm diseases that cause yellowing. If the older fronds are yellow, but not the younger fronds, or vice versa, then it might be a disease. If its all yellow, but not dying, then its nutrients. If the fronds are yellowing between the veins, they need manganese. If there are yellow spots and dead edges, they need potassium. If its just the older fronds yellowing and the center vein of those fronds stays green, its magnesium.

I would go ahead and spray them all with a mild liquid fertilizer. Then give each palm a slow-release fertilizer spike. And you might as well try the cornmeal too.
