How do you prune a rose bush?

This is June, right? Sometime last year, I asked the same question and got an answer. Here's what I can recall:-- The best time to prune your rose bush is in the fall (Nov-Dec). Trim all the old branches and every branch that goes somewhat horizontal. It said you can trim up to two- thirds. (I thought it meant height and density) This seems drastic but I did just that. During the fall and winter, water sparingly, like once every 10 - 15 days. In late winter, apply rose fertilizer. When bloom appears (late spring/early summer, water every 2 weeks. And cut all spent blooms regularly. The right spot to cut spent blooms is just above where a five-leaf appears. I realize my answer looks cryptic, but I hope it helps some. (By the way, my roses are in full bloom like I've never seen before.)

To trim the rose a snip above the first or second set of leaves. Remember, the more you prune it the more lush it will become. Don't forget the Rose food. Good Luck!
One Spring, I grabbed the hedge trimmer and cut it short, straight across. Today it is the most beautiful Rose bush in the yard.

Roses can stand a light pruning in the fall and a heavy pruning in early spring. Prune any dead or diseased wood and anything that crosses and rubs. You want to make the cuts primarily above outward facing buds so it will open the center for good airflow.

Grab a pair of clippers, your sturdy gloves, and go at it. Cut back to the top branch with 5 stems. Water, and repeat. Roses are very sturdy plants. Don't be afraid to trim them. Because it will grow back. Trilli
