Why does mown/cut grass smell but normal grass doesn't?
Question:

Don't quote me on this because it's just a logical guess... but I would think when you cut the grass you're breaking open some of its cells and releasing chemicals that aren't otherwise released by the grass.
Cut grass gives off greenhouse gases due to the release of fluids such as chlorophyll from the severed stalks, and this smell contributes to global warming.
it does not cause global warming...my goodness people are freaking out about that.but i often wondered why it smelled myself...i also wonder why does it make your shoes green when you cut it..but you could run around all day on unmowed grass and your shoes will be fine...hmm...good question though...
it does smell, right after a good rain !
Because you are releasing the fluids contained inside the grass.
I am no scientist, but I would assume the smell is the leaf that is beginning to decompose. I compost all my clippings, and for a day or so there is a smell, then it is fine. Just like any produce that may have disappeared into the back of your fridge, no smell at first, but as it begins to decompose-then comes the oder.
It is being ground up and more molecules are getting into the air for your noise to sense.
