I live in MN and have a evergreen tree I can't get anything to grow under...not even grass?
Question:This evergreen tree is on the southside of the house infront of the patio and on the left side of the sidewalk going to the house...It gets the wind when blowing form the southeast. We put 3 whiskey barrels altered hights which lines up with the tree trunk..Took a hose that has been hanging for a very long time so it doesn't go round anymore.placed that on each side of the back side of the whiskey barrels and brought it around the tree.So I have like a stop sign look..Do you think this will look good.. I'm not good at these things..Any suggestion as to what will look or work the best in this area?
Answers:
The evergreen tree is probably causing the soil to be very acidic. Grass won't grow there. The whisky barrel will attract termites later. They may look nice but you need to plant them with acid soil loving plants. They include rodadendrons, azaleas, some violets, various ground covers. Call the nursery and ask for plants that thrive in that soil.
Try planting hostas under the tree. They don't seem to mind the acidic soil that pine needles cause.
