We are doing some landscaping and we bought six variegated miscanthus grass plants. My ? is how far apart?
Question:We bought some grass plants to put around the patio area since we are having it landscaped. My question is how far apart should the variegated miscanthus grass plants be planted from each other. I understand they grow out three feet. Therefore, this would lead me to believe they should be separated every six feet. Is this too much or not?
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,

Hi. Most miscanthus want a bit of room to be the most appealing. Because they tend to have beautiful, cascading shapes, you want to give them plenty of room.
Miscanthus "morning light", for example, has a very fine variegation, and also slender leaves.so it looks best when you can see the breeze blowing through it, and the light moving on it.
I would absolutely separate them and plant them every 6 feet if the spread of the particular cultivar is 3'. It will take a while for them to attain this height and width, but it is very difficult to move mature ornamental grasses, so I would stick with the wide planting.
Good luck!
after a few years, they will form clumps 2-3 feet wide, yes. Sometimes more. How far apart depends on how much space you want in between. If you want roughly the same amount of empty space between each clump, then every 6 feet is right.
If they get too big for you, then in the spring, when they are just beginning to send up new growth, simply dig up the whole clump, split it in half, and replant the size clump you want - and either toss, replant eslewhere, for give away the extra.
It depends on how close you want them to be. Do you want it to look full and tight or seperated. It all depends on your own taste.
