Weeding??
Question:whats the easiest way to weed a garden.i just tried doing it by hand and it takes tooo long.this is a vegetable garden if u needed to kno that.
Answers:
By hand is the way to go, with a small shovel. wear gloves- i just did this yesterday, it took 3 hours. good luck!
Sometimes after it rains I use my hoe and just run it along between the rows where the weeds are. I usually end up pulling some that grow up next to the plants. I don't have row cover, I haven't gotten around to it.
Weeding by hand IS the best way. To prevent the weeds from coming back, cover the area with 3-4 layers of newspaper (black & white print only). Cover with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch. The newspaper is biodegradable, and won't hurt your plants, and the mulch will help retain moisture in your garden.
Geese are excellent weeders. Get some geese and pin them in your garden
There are several options for weeding. If you have access to a rotor tiller, you can break up the ground that the weeds are growing in. Depending on how large the garden is, or how overcome with weeds, will depend on whether a rotor tiller is necessary. If you use this method, you will still have to break up the clumps, and remove the weeds by hand. There are various products on the market that claim to "kill" weeds, and not harm flowers or vegetables. Personally, I choose to hand weed. Yes it is arduous, but once the garden is weed free, a few minutes a day will keep it pretty much weed free. When you weed, you must make sure that the ground, or area to be weeded, is wet. It is easier to weed the ground when it has been soaked by rain, or use a hose to soften the dirt. This enables you to remove the entire root system of the weed. Soak the area thoroughly, and pull from the base, you will see how easy weeds come out, with the roots intact. Some difficult weeds will need to be dug out. If you only get the top, you will be continually weeding. After the garden is weed free, use mulch to prevent the growth of further weeds. You could also purchase weed guards. These are plastic, or perforated cloth. You lay them over the ground, before you plant, and put your plants through them by cutting holes for the plant. These covers allow water and fertilizer to get to the plants, but keep weeds from emerging at a minimum. Good Luck and happy gardening!
It goes with the territory darl'n, you didn't think those delicious fresh veggies were going to be totally free did you? That's why gardeners have a green thumb (and index finger). Try to get comfortable, loose worn clothing (or none), don't forget the sunblock and mosquito repellent if necessary, something to drink close at hand and a little music if the birds and bees aren't doing it for you. In my gardens I mix things up, I don't have dedicated flower and vegetable beds in straight little rows - boring ! Some of my beds are raised, which are easier to weed with my bad back and some are tight clumps of vegetation that crowd out weeds. This way when I'm weeding veggies my eyes and nose are never far from a beautiful flower and when I'm weeding flowers there's always a berry or crisp little carrot to munch on. The bottom line is if you don't enjoy it, go to the produce section in the grocery store. RScott
