Misquetos are swarming the back yard from June to Nov.?
Question:We live in Houston. Our subdivision spays several nights a week for misquetos, and I have no standing water in the back yard, just its pine trees, grass, and a flower garden. Is there something that works more than a few minutes to keep them out for good?
Answers:
I also live in houston (League city)and the best thing I have found and believe me it works great is a product made by Adams that you hook on to the end of your hose and spray your yard the one treatment usually lasts between 2 and 3 months and costs about $22.00 at any of the pet supply stores, it takes care of more then just mosquitos--i have noticed a big decrease in the fire ants. All bugs. It won't harm your plants or grass either.
I saw a thing for sale that is a couple hundred bucks, its like a light pole, about six feet, and supposed to keep them away up to a half mile or so. check online for that, sounds like it would work. In California they aren't so bad, just a few. In the south the cities should encourgage bat habitats, those things eat 10,000 insects each per night, mostly mosquitoes. Think I saw it in a garden catalog.
contact a professional. thats ur best chance. or have bonfire every night
i would say a bug zapper but sometimes those attract more bugs... what about raid yard guard? you can spray it whenever you have out door activities... some cintonella candles, good luck!
Here in the north we use tiki tourches a lot.
Seems you've done everthing else.no standing water, and spraying.
Other options:
Purple Martin Houses (the birds feast on mosquitoes)
Bat Houses (eat their weight in flying insects nightly)
My husband built a bat house and we purchaces a Purple Martin House from WalMrt. Both seem to be helping a lot.
There is a product that I think is called a Mosquito Magnet. You can buy them at most home improvement stores. They run on a tank of propane like you use on your BBQ.
From what I've been told they work quite well, they cover a very large area and they can kill tens of thousands of mosquitos in a day.
The link below is for Canadian Tire here in Ontario. You should be able to find something similar, and probably cheaper in Texas.
Try using Tiki Torches that helps here in the North.
Bats.
build some bat boxes.
bats eat mosquito's. bats eat lots of mosquito's.
basically, build a narrow birdhouse with no bottom, hang them high, in the pine trees and against your house.
we look forward to watching what we call the 'bat ballet' at dusk. no itchy bites.
Knowing that misquitoes are attracted to carbon minoxide I looked up some dry ice trap ideas and came across this fun little alternative misquito trap on DIY. For cheap raw materials imagine five or eight of these traps around the yard and it should rid a significant amount of bugs. I'm definitely going to try this one out over the summer. Good luck. :)
