I got a question on a hasta plant.?

Question:I just planted 3 hasta plants and a week later the leaves got big white spots and the leaves look like there dying. the leaves are just a light green. not sure what kind i have. i put pete moss and some fertilizer but not much at all. 10-10-10 was the fertilzer. is the plant dying? or is it just from taking them from a pot to a permanent place.

Answers:
Some hostas have white on them.

It sounds like you need to water them! They like to stay hydrated. Also, hostas like shady areas. Not sure where you live, but it's been hot and dry in the midwest recently.

I'd get out there with a hose or watering can. Good luck!

Sounds like sunburn/windburn.The plant was probably in the shade, & jammed together with others, protected from sun & wind (esp if at someplace like Lowes/HDepot -waaaay too close!) It might have been in a greenhouse not long before you bought it . Don't worry about it (much) . Leave the affected leaves on the plantfor at least a week, to protect the others, until they harden off.

ps . re: "hasta" There is a tiny species , Hosta venusta . When a customer asks for a small Hosta , I sometimes suggest (in an Ahhhnold voice ) " Hahhsta venusta, bay-bee!"

;D
Most hostas require shade and moist conditions. The white spots could be sunburn if they are receiving too much sun.

Here's a site on the care of hostas:

sounds like you fertilized too soon. miracle grow is the best i have found for Hosta's. they like the sun i have just found that out. you need to dig them up and check the soil. also before you plant them check the root ball, if you see the roots in a ball from being in the pot, loosen the soil around the bottom of the plant. water in the hole before you plant, not too much just about a cupful, really mix up a little miracle grow in a watering can and use that then plant the Hosta make sure you tap the dirt firmly around the plant to get the air out. then use the rest of the miracle grow after wards and you should be set.
Next to Orchids and Daylillies, Hostas are the toughest of plants. Just keep the plant well watered and it will be ok. If the leaves get a burned-out appearance, it may be getting too much sun and not enough water. Good luck-----
