I saw a tool on a DIY show that removed the grass from a yard in a roll. What is this machine called?

Question:It was for landscaping a yard and was used to make flower beds.

Answers:
It is a sod removal machine. It cuts the dirt under the grass roots and rolls it up. Be prepared for some heavy lifting if you don't stop often to remove what is rolled up. Sod companies use this to harvest sod and then cut it into pieces for laying at another location.

a grass skimmer
You could also use a "sod kicker", sod cutter
