What bushes are easy to propogate from cuttings ? read below?

Question:Hi, I tried to take cuttings off of pyrcantha and put in water and they didn't root and I added some root toner to the water. I thought they said it was easy to do but I must have cut them wrong or have done something wrong. What bushes are easy to propogate and how from cuttings. How about holly ?

Answers:
G'day mate, yeah I know the one. Orange berries, thorns? The plant I know is called Pyracantha angustifolia. It should propagate from stem cuttings planted into a mixture of 2 parts washed coarse river sand and 1 part peat-moss. That's how we did it back in the 80's when I was an Apprentice. If that doesn't work they should also grow from freshly collected seed. Just peel off the flesh and sow the seeds in some potting mix, cover lightly and water. I suspect the cuttings you placed in water just rotted from the base up.

Holly, or Ilex aquifolium as I knew it, can be grown the same way by cuttings or seed. Variegated holly is better from cuttings. Do you need specific information or is this okay? Well, good luck.

I am not sure about your plant, but most plants can grow roots in water. You cut just below a node. Try again and good luck.
How far is your (intended) scope of availability? - I still recall *the single leaf* I bought (granted it was a simple souvenier) when I vacationed to "de island" of Jamaica. Laid upon a moist bed of soil, this leaf sprouted!
After a few days, I had an entire FOREST of growing leaves, all potted indoors!
This tropical plant, called the LOVE LEAF is a hearty plant from the tropics. I was told that these leaves are dried and ground to make a blend of teas that is served in the tropics.
Just to add to what Ozzie said.

Do not stivk them in a glass of water. Frist, their is aa high probability that they will rot or grow fungus. Second, ifthey do root, they will not survive the move to soil and will ahve to remain in water for the rest of its life. they will grow different roots for water then they will for soil and the two do not transfer.

also, if the cuttings dont work, you can try what is called "air-layering". You remove a ring of bark from the branch making sure to only remove the outer laye rand leave the green layer between the bark and wood. you then wrap this in wet peat moss and cover with Celophane wrapper. Roots will grow out of the area where the bark was removed. Once you can see the roots through the wrapping you can cut the branch just below this point and plant.
