What is Safran?
Question:I have an Bird area in my yard. I used to have a special feeder for the finches. I read they like Safran seeds. Well, all is done and now I have sprouts covering my garden bed with these Safran seeds. Should I leave them there and see what's becoming out of them? Or should I remove them? What is Safran used for? thanks

Are you sure you don't mean safflower seeds? Saffron is a spice made from the pistils of a type of crocus. Safflower seeds are white seeds that look similar to sunflower seeds and is commonly used for bird food, either by itself or mixed with sunflower seeds.
Finches, as noted above, really like thistle seed. Thistle seed is black and very small, about 1/8 inch long and 1/16 inch wide. You need a special feeder to hold thistle seed, where safflower seed doesn't.
Most Finch feeders use Thistle seed. Not sure what Safran is. I have heard of Saffron but it is a VERY expensive spice used in soups. See link below.

Saffron is a spice.
Safran is good for seasoning rice and eggs.
After feeding birds for more years than I care to remember, I must ask, what on earth is Safran ???
