Oak Tree Identity...?
Question:Can anyone tell me exactly which type of Oak Tree is the fastest growing ? I was once told that the Burr Oak is the fastest, then once again that the Monterrey Oak is the fastest. What about Post Oak ? Which one will grow fastest in South Central Texas in Seguin midway between San Antonio & Austin ?
Thanks !

Answers:
Bur Oak - slow (Expect only 15 to 20' of new growth over a 20 yr. period)
Pin Oak - fast (Hardy in zones 4 to 8)
Chestnut Oak - medium/fast (12-15' over a 7-10 yr. period; hardy in zones 4-8)
Swamp White Oak - fast grower (zones 4-8)
Shumard Oak - medium/fast (hardy in Texas)
Post Oak - slow
Note: Oak wilt attacks oaks in the red & white oak groups. It is death to any oak in the red oak group. Oaks in the white group are not less susceptible, they just can survive an attack.
A Bur Oak would be your best bet. Unfortunately that part of Texas has a soil born disease call 'oak wilt' has been killing off many of the oak trees. A Bur Oak is less susceptible to the disease. Hope that helps!
