Do outdoor fountains require water chemicals like swimming pools?

Question:my fountain in my patio gets tons of debri and now the water is very murky...should I put in pool chemicals to avoid this? and the pump gets blocked up at least once a week any suggestions?

Hi, I have a pond and use a biological filer system to keep my very fat 14 goldfish swimming though clear water but have bought an algae clear product before and then didn't use it because it was really listed for fountains. I bought that product in Wal-marts garden department by the pond pumps not in the aquarium section. There is a algae destroyer that is safe for fish called, what else but AlgaeFix. You do have to be careful with some of these products if you have pets drinking out of the pond or fountain. But you really have to remove the debris to keep it clear. The debris and the sun light will cause the murkiness/algae.

my parents had an outdoor 3 bucket water fall thing and they would pour some bleach in and let it run through for a few days to keep it clean. and once or twice a year they'd drain the buckets and clean all the leaves out of them. that kept them clean and in good working order.
well, I would think there should be some bleach like stuff in there to kill mosquitos. The debris has to be kept out which means you have to physically screen it each day, just like a swim pool.
I would think so but if you have any fish at all in the fountain obviously not because it would totally kill all the fish. I would check at your local pet store, they carry all kinds of chemicals designed for that sort of thing. If anything, fish and plants are a could ecological filter that would balance everything out. If its algae your suffering from you can get algae eaters from the pet shop, (that is if your fountain is more of a fountain rather than a pond.)
if you can inset your pump in a block of foam, it will not get clogged so easily, and the foam is easy to clean or replace, the foam will also build up beneficial bacteria that will help keep your fountain clean.

Be careful of direct sunlight to any standing water that is not moving, algae is a bummer.
yes put chemicals in it you dont want to put bleach in it it will kill the birds or fish if you have fish in it if it gets alot of debri in it I would consider moving it to a new location if possible as to bleach for killing the mosquitoes they have tablets for that you can add to the water I know Walmart sells them
You will need to put bleach in it for the purpose of mosquito larvae control. They have a chemical out there that will also help with clarity of the water and it does real good. Just about any place has it. Lowes I know has it for sure. The pump you will need to place level on a piece of foam or something and make sure that the water level is above the pump at all times. In the summer months you have to add water to the fountains and ponds every few days or more often depending on the weather of where you live.
