What's the best way to treat soil that is mostly red clay to prepare for planting a lawn.?
Question:I've tilled it, just curious to know what fertilizers, mulch, whatever to add to better suit the growing of grass (bermuda).
Answers:
The best way to find out how to amend soil is to send a sample off to you local extension and have them analyze it. You might need to raise or lower ph, add sand, add iron, add organics or top soil. Fertilizer is always a good idea if done before tilling, not after if you are planting grass though.
I have reseeded a few bare spots in my lawn that were for the most part "red clay" what I did was loosen the soil and spread the bermuda grass seeds along with fertilizer and again run over the spots with a firm rake to blend the mixture in, then I covered with 1/4" peat moss and kept it watered (twice a day for 3 weeks now). That was about 3 weeks ago and there is a pretty good amount of bermuda grass already coming up. Bermuda grass is a hearty grass that seems to have no problem growing in most soils. I dont know if this method will work on an entire lawn though
