What is the best way to sharpen my hedge trimmers?
Question:I have Stihl hedge trimmers. I usually get these sharpened at a local shop, but the wait is 2 weeks and the cost is $35-$40. How can I sharpen these myself?
Answers:
It takes a sharp eye, a steady hand, patience, and the right file or grinder. I do my own sharpening and these rate right up there with hair scissors in difficulty. I'm not saying you can't do it, but an 'answer' given on this forum will only frustrate you. Start with a good book on the subject (get a copy of the shop manual for your trimmer if you can) then check out some videos on the subject. This is important for the next step, which requires a working vocabulary of the subject. Ask the guy doing the sharpening if you can watch? If he says no, don't be offended, he's trying to make a living like the rest of us. If he says yes, stand as far out of his way as you can and still see, ask pertinent questions using you new found vocabulary and tip him generously. RScott
It is a tedious task, but one that can be done if you really want to save the money...
(Used to do landscaping and they would dull often...and it was just too expensive to keep getting a local shop to sharpen them)
Get
-Dremel (or similar tool)
-A triangle-shaped metal sharpening bit
Take the hedge trimmer blade off and sharpen.
no need to disassemble anything, just align the top and bottom blades and use a dremel tool, i use a 4" hand held grinder just to touch the up a little, do this only after you practice on your lawn mower blade, just to get the hang of things. it is easy to screw up such a small blade with a powerful tool so take caution and wear safety glasses !
i bought one of the samurai sharks from tv and they work great. I would suggest trying them, only 20 bucks for 2 of them.
