How do I tend to crab grass?
Question:I was wondering if there was any way to keep crab grass under control other than just getting rid of it. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

There are many ways to control crab grass, non-herbicidal and herbicidal, but the best way is to maintain a lawn with conditions unsuitable for crab grass growth i.e. a correctly fertilized, thick and well watered lawn. Existing crab grass can be pulled out with a hoe so that their roots dry out.
Crabgrass is not shade tolerant, and grows best in full, hot sun. Adjusting the mower height upward will provide more shade at the soil surface. Without enough light, crabgrass seeds, along with some other weed seeds, will not germinate as readily, if at all. Most home lawns can be mowed at 2 1/2 to 3 inches.
If it is on your flower beds, you can use a vinegar/liquid dish washing detergent mixture (1 gallon white vinegar and 8 drops of detergent) to kill the crab grass by spraying.
You could just learn to accept it. If you call weeds plants then you don't have to fight them anymore. Dandelions are my favourite flowers.
Just about any hardware or home center will sell products such as "crab grass preventer". It is best to put it on early, before it gets too hot, as that is when the crab grass thrives. I put some on each year, and it keeps it under control. It won't get rid of all of it right away with one application, but makes it manageable.
The best way to deal with it this time of year is to pull it. After watering your lawn or after a rain, you can pull the grass up by it's roots, but be sure that you get the entire top of the plant and as much root as possible..
Next spring, apply a pre-emergent (for crabgrass) before soil temperatures warm too much. There are a number of fertilizer blends that contain crabgrass control. Look for one with "Halts" as part of it's formulation. The pre-emergent keeps the crabgrass seed from germinating.
Crabgrass is a warm season annual grass, so if the seeds can't germinate, there will be no crabgrass. You need to do this every year,'cause if your neighbors have crabgrass, you can still get it, too. Be sure that you don't plant to reseed your lawn at any point, because pre-emergents will work on all kids of seeds, including the kind you WANT to grow.
I agree with the post about keeping the lawn such that the crabgrass can't get a start, but if you have it already, that's hard to do. Crabgrass makes it's own opportunity to grow by crowding out more desirable grasses.
Good Luck!
Be very nice to it - then it won't be so crabby.
u pee all over it. it may sound dumb but it works
