How do you locate the nest/hive/home of yellow jackets you see flying around in your yard?

It will take some observation. They will be underground where they maintain a hive of several layers that resembles a wasp nest. But on the surface all you see is a tiny hole, often at the base of a tree or structure. It will take some observation to zero in on them. They will depart en mass in the morning and return likewise late afternoon. Observe them then. When you notice a common spot where many land you will find the hole there. You may have to look very carefully. If its within your comfort zone you may try to kill the nest (I would) BE CAREFUL! There is always a sentry watching and ready to alert the hive. Don't approach it til evening when the hive has returned, or at sunrise before they emerge, otherwise the bulk will be out on business and will return and loiter around the dead hole. Lotsa people use gas but this is more dangerous and environmentally unsound. Best is the long distance wasp and hornet killer aerosol. Get as close as you can, you will notice if they alert. Move in very slowly. Beforehand take a practice shot to test the can and stream direction, (a near miss will get you stung).aim steadily at the hole and release the entire contents of the can, adjusting the stream into the hole. Haul booty fast. For fun later dig up the nest carefully and notice how it is many layers stacked like floors of a high rise.
Just sort of watch them and study them they go to their nest or hive pretty often so eventually they will lead you, we found some in a tree last summer and their hive.
I agree with watching them but instead of bug spray the people at animal control told me to wait until dark when they are all in the nest and pour gas in the hole to the nest.It was very effective they all died
