Butternuts?

Question:My new home has a butternut tree. I've been told they are very good to eat. I've picked up the ones that have fallen off the tree. What do I do with them now? Do I dry them out somehow? Do I peel the outside?

Answers:
You are lucky to have a butternut tree. Many have been killed off by a fungus. You need to take the outsides off/shell them. Butternuts are a type of walnut and are used the same way. We put them in the oven to "dry" them on 200 degrees for about 15 minutes. They are very oily nuts that spoil pretty quickly. You can freeze them to use later if you have a large tree and a good crop.

dry them out
They are a very good tasting nut.Yes let the outside covering dry..then take that part off, store as you would any nuts but they need to dry.
