Answers:
You might have to trap them & put them down.
Coons will eat anything.
Like the cayenne...don't count on that working.
Go get some live traps & a .22 or call in a critter control type of company.
As far as releasing them in the wild to be 'humane'. They'll find their way back to 'their' home (aka. yours) & more than likely get hit by a car on the way there. Plus there's rabies.
Think about it.
Are you SURE it's racoons?
Skunks & oppussoms LOVE to dig for bugs & will destroy the ground in no time at all.
If you are set against trapping & disposing, try ammonia.
I have no idea if it'll kill your grass or not but animals HATE it.
I put it in my garbage can & around my bags on garbage day & nothing bothers even the stinkiest bag.
Maybe spray some around the areas they like to get into the most or on their path to your place.
ask my mom for her goulash recipie. That thing would keep a starving african at bay.
12 gauge would help.
Take used kitty litter and pour it around the outside of the area this should keep the critters out. You have to redo after a good rain tho.
Mix in some cayenne pepper. Both powder and crushed.
I second the cayenne. I had an ongoing battle with a skunk two years ago that was getting into my garbage, and I sprinkled cayenne on the lid. Liberally. It worked well. :)
Good luck!
I would second the ammonia. If you take ammonia-soaked rags and set them in something like a shallow dish (don't put the rags directly on the lawn!), the smell may help deter the critters from coming around.
