Need to kill rye grass that keeps coming back year after year on my lawn.?
Question:Live in Texas and grass keeps coming back year after year so I guess it isn't winter rye which supposedly dies during the winter. Everyone says it's rye and it grows twice as fast as the burmuda grass. Cannot get rid of it.
Answers:
Use round up but you can not re seed for some time or cover the areas with black plastic. No sun , water or air and it will die out.
Childhood Friend,
The person whom planted your turf knew what they were doing!! The Rye and Bermuda mixture is classic and used on most golf courses.
To kill your Rye would kill the Bermuda. The combination of the types may be a pain, however, it can save your entire turf. Should your Bermuda be overcome with the Cinch Bugs, disease, or fungi, known to attack the Bermuda (particularily in your area) you have nothing but the Rye as turf.
The fact that the Rye is growing is a good sign. It may mean a higher maintenance function in running the mower, however, would you rather have bare and naked lawn? Eventually the Bermuda will choke out the Ryegrass by it's spreading. You can kill the Rye and start all over again or accept that the Rye compliments the Bermuda.
Set your mowing height at 2 1/2" and you will eliminate the Rye versus any chemical usage. Frankly I would both cut the Rye at that height and overseed my turf each fall with a perennial fine rye to insure a quick and green turf. Both love a 10-10-10 with minerals granular fert in mid Fall and again in early Spring.
Most people wish to grow turf versus killing it. Go to a Golf Course and find the time, monies, effort, it takes to maintain a single variety of grass. Without variety in the turf you are open to devestation. Good Luck.
You need to treat your yard with atrazine it will kill bahia and Rye grass. I'm not a grass expert but thats what I'm told is the cure.
