I want to grow Dahilas. What do I need to know to do this? Libby?

Question:My first love is growing Roses, but recently have become interested in Dahilas. Are they hard to grow? I live in Northeast Florida and have plenty of growing room, both sunny and shade. And my soil is very good for growing roses but not sure about dahilas.

Answers:
yes you can, i live in SC and have them every year (they will come back year after year) they will like full sun, they will get tall too, mine get 5-6 feet tall, you can cut them back some to maye them bush a little more. they come in many colors to, just mix some compost & potting soil like micrile grow in the dirt befor you plant, give them plenty of water too. when they start gettilg tall stake them up so they don't fall over with hard wind. in winter cut them down to ground they will come back in spring. good luck

no way
I live in Georgia and my dahlias look gorgeous. Like roses, you have to constantly pick the dead heads off to keep them blooming, and they like a lot of water. Dahlias aren't too picky about their soil. I have some growing in a clay- sandy soil and I also have some in pots growing in Miracle grow potting soil. The ones in the ground need extra nutrients, but they look just as good as the ones in pots.
