What kind of tree is this?

Question:I bought a young tree at a farmers market this weekend. The woman I bought it from said it was a "flastula japonica," or at least that is what I heard. When I went home to look that up, it appears I must have heard wrong, or else she told me the wrong name. The closest thing I've found is for a Saphora Japonica, aka Japanese scholar tree, but the pictures of that don't look like my tree.

The tree I have has broad flat leaves, that somewhat resemble a hand - the main leaf has 5-7 "fingers" about an inch or so wide.

Unfortunately, that's about all the detail I can give - I'm not sure what else would be helpful aside from a picture...

Anyone have any ideas?

Fatsia japonica ?

what plant zone are you in? I have a japonica, but it is not a tree, but a shrub & isn't what you describe.
Your little seedling is called a "Betula" Japonica. Also known as the "Japanese White Birch". Betula is the "genus" of the tree and the Japonica is the "variety". They grow to about 40 to 50 feet in height when mature. They also have very beautiful white bark, which it gets when about 5 to 6 yrs. of age. The Bark "peels" sometimes, adding interest to its form.. Hope this answers your question...

A pic would be great since alot of trees or shrubs could match that description. How about a Japanese maple?
