Tips on caring for rosebushes?

Question:My dad and I have the hardest time caring for them. They always seem to die. My bf's mom has the greatest luck with them, and she says all she does is plant them and water them. I doubt if it's the soil because we live in the same area. Anyone have any personal tips they've learned while growing them? We don't want to let it die, because it's a rosebush we received at my mother's funeral last year.

Answers:
My tips are to never water the rose bushes from the top. Only water at the ground. I use miracle grow for roses about once a month and I spray the leaves on the bush with Ortho Rose Pride to prevent insect infestations and mold and other leaf diseases. Each fall I trim my rose bushes back and mulch around them for the winter. In the spring I prune more off if needed and when warm enough I move the mulch back from around them to keep them from getting too hot.

I hope you have good luck! There is nothing prettier than rose bushes in your yard or landscape.

Check for bugs! Also, use a spray fertilizer (like the Miracle Grow ones that attach to your hose), they have specific rose formulas of fertilizer and gardening powder. Make sure you're not over-watering them, and it may be the soil if yours is more sandy (sand doesn't retain water and carries little nutrients).
okay first off roses are acid loving plants and you can try this . Put used coffee grounds around the base of the plant and water it like normal . and after that leave it alone it should do just fine . There is nothing nicer than a pretty rose bush . good luck .
The number one thing I've personally noticed that will kill a rose bush other than infestation is mold/black spot. Be sure to water only the root area of your bush trying your best not to get the leaves wet. Also, it's best to water early morning so that any leaves that do get wet can dry out from the sun. My sister lost a number of rose bushes from mold and black spot. I use a disease control product that you just shake on the ground around the base of the plant by "Bayer" that helps with insects, disease, mold, and feeds the plant too! It's great stuff. Check your local Wal-mart or Meyers gardening department to see exactly which kind will work best for you. Even though you have the same soil as your bf's mom, you have different circumstances, habitats, and atmospheres around your plants, so the care they need will always be different.
Best of luck!
