Patio materials calculation?
Question:Hi, I am laying an 18m2 patio and I need to know the following:
Appx how much type 1 or similar hardcore to order at appx 2" compacted depth
Appx how much sand to order for levelling off
Many thanks!

The calculation is length time width times depth. These units should all be the same, meters, feet, inches, whatever you want to use. The resulting answer needs to be converted to a standard for measuring these materials such as cubic yard or meter. Since these materials are usually sold by weight, you will need to convert the volume measurement to a weight. The source for your aggregate should be able to give you these materials in the proper amounts. You should add 5-10 percent for waste and for the varying moisture content of the materials.
If you are using 2 inches of base, you should use about 1 inch of sand, so the volume of sand will be 1/2 of the base material.

One of the easiest ways to figure it out would be to get a contractor to give you a free estimate with materials listed on the estimate. Then take his estimate and go buy the materials yourself.
