Hydroseeded Lawn drying out!!?
Question:I bought a new house on Friday and my lawn was hydroseededon Thursday. I have been doing my best to water it (it's almost an acre of hydroseed) but I can't keep up with it (plus I have been having sprinkler problems (clogging with sediment) - and I am on well water!)
Anyways, I'm nervous. The lawn is moist in some areas but some are bone dry. I try to water them but the sprinklers freeze up and then I run out of pressure. The last three days have been 85 - 95 degrees and sunny, and it just looks like a dustbowl. Am I going to get any grass or am i screwed?
Answers:
Don't panic yet, you still have a chance.
My husband hydroseeded new construction lawns, and some of them were never watered other than naturally, and they still came up. Although, we were in PA, and it sounds like you may be further south.
Anyway, I would work on your water problem right away, as I answered in your other question. In the mean time, you may have to do some hand watering. DO NOT water during the daytime! It is counter-productive, and may actually make things worse. The heat of the sun evaporates the water too quickly, and on new growth, can burn it out.
Since your sprinkler keep clogging, do you have time to go out there with a hose and do it by hand? Water between dusk and dawn, even overnight is okay. Ideally, you want to get about 1/2 inch of the soil wet, but even just a quick wetting of the seed will help if you are pressed for time.
Good luck, and you may email me if you have more specific questions.
