What about gasoline as a driveway weed killer.?
Question:I bough a gallon of the cheapest driveway weed killer at lowes for $6.97. The "good" stuff was $17 bucks a gallon!!.
Even at $3.50 gasoline is cheaper...and when ive spilled it by accident, it works IMMEDIATELY. The weed killer is bad for the enviroment too, and flammable so why not just use gas?
Answers:
thanks... like the stuff ain't expensive enough as it is! ... and u wanna go and just through it all over ur driveway just because u don't wanna buy some round up or something!! shishh... i just thought the gas companies was being stupid with the raising of the gas prices, but with people like u doing the things u do... i see why!! good luck with that one man!
I always thought bleach.
The best reason not to use gas is that it will deteriorate your driveway and quite quickly. May I suggest a good dose of salt and water. It works very well between bricks so why not on a driveway!
Try diesel it actually has the same effect. typically the flammability of gasoline and diesel is high and also in drought like conditions its awful to use. Just do it safely. Also timber companies recommend putting a cup of diesel on stumps every few weeks to keep a stump not growing to a new tree.
WOW..! Is the drive way gravel or Black top.?? Gasoline would be ok but it would be dangerous near a spart.. and I would not walk on it for awhile...
Gas will indeed destroy the asphalt of the driveway and of course, there is the fact that it washes into the storm sewers. (not to mention off your driveway onto your lawn...try re-seeding a gas spill) Gas is also a lot more flammable then the weed killer. All it takes is a spark to see your driveway now become your barbecue...hope you didn't like your car...(now yes, that's tongue in cheek..but honestly, I have seen a lot stranger things happen when someone decided to try a short cut involving gasoline or other fuels.)
There are several reasons not to use gasoline as a weed killer in this situation. Oil can be bad for the environment as well as weed killers (herbicides). Herbicides are required to be registered by the EPA and most state Pesticide Boards or equivalent. The registration process is usually a series of tests on how well the chemical will break down in the environment (persistence) and toxicity levels ect. All states have laws that forbid the use of unregistered pesticides, like gasoline, in the environment.
While you are correct in saying gasoline will kill weeds, it also kills a host of other organisms as well, bacteria that are natural to the environment, non target insects and a host of other animals. Gasoline is not designed to be used in the fashion so it may do more harm then the herbicide in the long run.
There are probably additional safety hazards to using gasoline on a drive way. The point at which gasoline is ignited is much lower then most chemicals. Meaning it may catch on fire if the correct conditions are present. I have this image of gasoline being applied to the driveway and just as you finish up the entire drive catches fire! While you make mention that the weed killer is flammable, I would imagine it would not be able to be started as easily as gas would and has been tested for this.
As a side note would caution you with purchasing pesticides based simply on price. Each pesticide will have a different toxicity to different plants. So it is always better to contact your cooperative extension office and talk with them regarding what to apply based on your situation. For example, some weed killers will not work on grasses though are very effective on broad leafs. If your weed problem is a grass and the "good stuff" is not made for grasses then you have wasted your money completely.
Horrible for the environment and dangerous too. Buy a gallon of vinegar for ~$2 in the grocery store and try dumping that on the weeds instead.
I'd use gas, diesel, even agent orange if I knew where to get it. To hell with environmentalists. When I want it dead, I want it dead.
Actually the "good Stuff" industrial strength ground sterilant is $34 bucks (Link Below). This stuff will stop re-growth for up to a year as long as you saturate the soil where the weeds are growing.
Using Gas/Petro will kill the weeds but they will grow back not to mention the hazards of such a method.
Cheapest way is to pull em, weed wack or pressure wash or pressure garden hose. They will grow back but at least you wont blow up the jeep!
Good luck with that.
i use vinegar on my rock path. shouldnt hurt concrete and lasts fairly long. weeds and grass die in couple of days.buy cheap generic brand on sale. voila
