I need some landscaping advice?
Question:I just bought my first house and would like to improve the landscaping, problem is, I have no idea what to do nor how to do it.
My first instinct is just pay someone to make my yard look nice, but I would rather do it myself but am afraid it would look worse than it already is due to my lack of experience.
Basically I am looking for some resources or websites that has practical help for a beginner. I tried googling but didn't see anything of too much use on the first few hits.
Some specific things I am looking for:
-Recommendations on planting medium sized trees (10 ft), should I try this myself or let an expert do it?
-Pictures/layouts of samples and ideas that are practical. Everything I see on the internet is way too over the top and looks like it was made for people with a mansion
So please help me get started, thanks

My two favorite books are Landscaping for Wildlife by Russell Link and Edible Landscaping by Rosalind Creasy. They'll help you evaluate what you want from your yard, and how to make it happen. Great references to pour over. You can probably get them from your local library.
As for planting large trees, keep in mind that smaller trees adapt better to being planted than larger trees, so they often end up catching up to, and surpassing larger trees you've put in. Especially if you plant your trees with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, available at better nurseries and from Fungi Perfecti. The fungi forms partnerships with plant roots and makes all your plants and trees grow better and healthier - I've seen how great it works.
go to home depot or lowes and buy a landscaping book they show how to plant and etc... make sure you buy native plants that will grow best in your area...
make a little sketch of your scape and put the things youde like to in the sketch then go shopping for it
Try www.bhg.com (Better Homes and Gardens). They have lots of resources as well as garden plans according to your zone and light and soil conditions.
