Why are the buds on my rosebush turning brown and dying?
Question:18 months ago we moved into a house that has a rosebush planted on a rear corner of the house. Both summers it grew nicely and looked very healthy. As the buds started to come on they looked very healthy as well. It seems when the buds are big and just about to open they turn brown and most of them die off. A few seem to make it through and bloom but not many. I have never grown or tended to roses before so I don't know what it could be or what to do. They are a very pale pink and I think it may be climbing rose bush.
Answers:
Look carefully. Are there aphids on the new growth? They suck out all the juices and make the new part wither and die.
Rose Defense (neem oil) is a great all-purpose fungicide/pesticide for roses. It seems to control all the major rose problems.
roses need a glass of water a day. Maybe that? I don't know, but they only stay alive in Summer.
It sounds like you have Botrytis Blight! It is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. The disease causes flower buds to droop and remain closed. Buds turn brown and decay. Sometimes partially opened buds are attacked, and an entire flower may be covered by gray fungus.
The symptoms are a smooth, slightly sunken, grayish-black lesion may develop just below the flower head. The bud is destroyed. It frequently hangs over at or near the lesion. The fungus may also infect stub ends of stems from which flowers have been cut.
To control try cutting and destroying all infected blossoms as soon as they droop or die. To prevent large numbers of fungal spores, remove dead plant material on which spores are produced. Fungicide application may be necessary.
Bayer Advanced has a fairly new product out call All-in One. It is a fertilizer, insecticide and fungicide all in one product. Best of all, you mix with water and pour it around the base of the rose bush - NO SPRAYING! You do this every 6 weeks throughout the growing season. Give this a try and good luck!
i had this same problem earlier in the season! i looked at the next set of buds that were getting ready to open and noticed a little white spider... the lil guy was very shy too.. just take some bug spray and spray down the buds and the rest of the plant and it'll kill the pests that are causing this! the next set of buds should open beautifully! i also treat mine with this stuff and it works great on all sorts of problems! it can found at walmart or lowes! bayeradvanced Rose and Flower All in One Care....good stuff
