What are these biting flies that want to keep me out of my yard this time of year? They fly in your eyes, etc.?
Question:These biting flies have been out since May but are really bad now. What can I do about them?
Answers:
You gave us no clue where you live, and there are different kinds of biting flies in different places. This is a bad year for them in South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota, partly because of all the rain/flooding we had last month. Usually they appear in June but this year they came in May. They are still here. No spray will protect you. Brand like OFF! and Cutter contain Deet or Picardin, which is NOT effective against biting flies or ticks, only mosquitos. I do a lot of outdoor photography and these bugs (we call them buffalo gnats here) can drive me insane. Their bites are very itchy for several days and worse than mosquito bites. All I can do is wear a headnet and either a longsleeve shirt or a netting jacket. You have to cover yourself with something to keep from getting bit. The good news is they are generally gone by the end of June.

it's a sign of rain if they are bitting u! as for em flying in ur eyes. good luck with that one... i hate that when it happens! lol u could try spraying ur yard down with some bug-b-gone. it works for bugs on the ground as well as bugs that fly... i thinks it's the smell that comes from the ground! works for me though! good luck!
Try wearing bug spray or putting tiki lights around where you are outside. We try to put candles on our deck, they actually have some really pretty ones if you look hard enough (The Bug repellent ones). Good Luck! :)
most likely horseflys
Hear in NE Ohio, the deer flies are just starting to be active and will be for a month or so. These like to land on you and bite. There is usually a couple that hang around my mailbox for some reason. They are usually pretty easy to kill (they like my bald head) so I get them by slapping my head and neck whenever they bite. Use a DEET based repellent if the get really bad. You will never be able to kill them all, so just be glad that they will have lived out their life cycle in a few weeks.
