pick the pups as soon as they have 2 shoots coming from them, don't cut them off just grab the ball of the pup next to the trunk and pull down to break it away.
Pups can be taken whenever you desire, but many experts say to take them in Spring or early Summer. However, the longer the pup is allowed to stay with the mother the larger and faster it will grow once it is divided.
When you are ready to remove the pup, first trim all the fronds off. Then dig around the pup so that you can see where you need to make your cut. Using a sharp shovel remove the pup as close to the mother as possible. Once the pup is removed it should be allowed to dry out for a few days. Then plant the pup in a container slightly larger than it and water when the soil drys out. Rooting should take place in a few months.
