What are some warm temperate food plants?
Question:I live at a high altitude within the Sub-tropical zone. We receive winter frosts occasionally, but no snow, etc. The heat in summer can be up to about 40 degrees C... Winter high is on average about 15 degrees C. We are also rather drought stricken. The soil in my home yard is red volcanic. The soil on my property where I hope to move is rich black loam (very good drainage but poor rainfall.)
I am looking to become self-reliant. Does anyone have any suggestions for what would grow in my area, both food and other useful plants necessary for self-reliance?
Answers:
My husband says potatoes. They like to grow in the warmer climates.
We grow tomatoes with a lot of success too. However, you have to water them. (Do you have the ability to water plants?) If you are able to give your garden veggies a drink (like from your well) you can grow pretty much anything! We have a semi-arid-ish bit of land too, but we water like crazy and you wouldn't believe the things that we have coaxed to live! If you are able to grow Saskatoon bushes they are native to Canada, very hardy, love the heat, don't mind the cold, don't require much water.they grow wild, have fabulous berries and make magnificent jams/pies/jelly/muffins...anyw... you put a blueberry. Check with your laws regarding importing them, however...Australia does not need its ecosystem messed up more! :)
almost any type of food plant ( tomatos,pepper,melon,squash,on... etc. ) will grow in that environmet as long as you can IRRIGATE (water) it. good luck to you.
