Question:we have our plants in our garage during the stormy winter. we live in southern, mn. we usually have tomatoes, and some other hardy plants. i know tomatoes can be a pain to start. some light that is not very expensive. we have our plants in very large containers. does anybody know where i could get some plant lights? home depot? lowes? sams club?
Answers:
I purchased a "grow light" at Wal Mart early this past Spring for $9.99. It is about 20 inches long and the bulbs to replace it are not very expensive. I planted some grape tomatoes and with this "grow light", it has all the instructions on how high above the planted seeds the light needs to be and all the instructions you will need to get things growing. I did have natural sunlight coming into the area where I had these seeds planted BUT at nighttime I would sometimes leave it on for additional light that wasn't so hot on the plants like the daylight sometimes would get. I would highly suggest the "grow lights" at Wal Mart!!
GOOD LUCK!!
Home Depot or Lowe's sell standard flourescent fixtures (4 ft.)
for under 20 bucks. Add one standard tube and one "plant light" and that will mimic the "full-spectrum" needed for growth. Add a plug-in timer and you're set.
Happy growing!!
I know this is going to sound funny, but I started my tomatoes and peppers this year in my basement with the flourescent beer light that is made to hang over the pool table.
It just has regular flourescent lights in it, and all the plants started and grew just fine. I did lower it to about 6" above the seedlings and raised it as they grew.
This was the first time I ever started seedlings inside, and it worked great. The plants are now growing in my garden, strong and healthy!
Good Luck!
