How to kill weeds???white spirit?
Question:We have re-landscaped our garden this year and it was lovely in the spring. But now our garden is over run with weeds, I mean theres so many of the things you cant tell them apart from the plants, the borders look like the amazon! there even all over grass!! Is it true that if you mix white spirit with water and spray it on the leaves it will travel to the root and kill it? If not does anyone know any household mixtures like this that will? I did try weedol last year but was not that impressed with it. please help me!
Answers:
Weeds need to be treated more than once as new seeds germinate at different times. Keep at it with Weedol or any systematic weedkiller. There are different types for different weeds.
Try mixing water with whiskey and the weeds will come up half cut!
Use a glycophosphate based weed killer like "RoundUp". That *is* a systemic i.e. it gets absorbed and kills the plant down to the roots.
(Many own-brand weedkillers are glycophosphate based and cost 1/2 the price. Check the labels)
I've been a professional gardener for 20 years and I've never used anything more effective than glysophate based weedkillers.
Roundup is a popular one. Beware that it is not selective and will kill anything you spray it on. You will need to repeat the treatment as necessary. No weedkiller will rid you of weeds permenantly.
I've never heard of using white spirit in the garden. I would think that not only will it damage insects, birds and certainly the soil, but you'll end up with a highly imflammable garden for a few days. All in all - bad idea.
The best thing top do to safeguard your plants is to handweed the entire garden - or better still, get a gardener in.
1. Dig a hole in the middle of the garden
2. About a metre deep
3.Insert some cemtex
4.Set it off
5. Kaboom - weeds gone in a second dead easy no messing about.
a dangerous idea using white spirits---got to keep at the weeds all the time--every day if necessary--ask at your garden centre.good luck.
DO NOT use white spirit or glyphosate materials on lawns ! There are many selective LAWN WEED KILLERS on the market, buy one and follow the instructions. NEVER use household products unless you are a knowledgeable experienced gardener. PS. DO NOT use Weedol on LAWNS !! Glyphosate is a broad spectrum herbicide that will kill grasses ,shrubs and trees. Why are people recommending it for lawns ? Use ONLY a SPECIFIC lawn weed killer.
white spirit is very harmful to the environment. Vinegar or salt work just as well
Try a systemic weedkiller eg. Roundup. This kills the roots as well as the tops. If the weeds are amongst the plants use the "sticky glove" technique ie. apply the herbicide mixed with a little washing up liquid by hand (protected by a rubber glove) to the weed. For glossy leaved weeds this works a treat as the washing up liquid helps the herbicide stick to the leaves.Because a systemic herbicide is taken into the whole plant system it is slower but kills the whole weed. Once weed free mulch the beds to prevent re seeding. Cocoa fibre is a nice small mulch & blends in well with the appearance of the soil.
I just do it by what seems the old fashioned way.
I use feed and weed and our lawns, and i make sure, once a week, I get on my hands and knees and take a trowel to the weeds, digging down to the bottom of the root.
I refuse to use and weedkiller around the flower bed as i do not know what, if any adverse affects they could have on my bedding plants.
I see it as if the weedkiller can kill a weed, than surely it will kill a plant, and i wont contaminate my soil with these poisons.
weed killer is ok but i find pouring boiling warter on the weeds leves works better, but i will allso kill grass and other plants
