Holes in my yard?

Question:I am starting to get holes in my backyard. They are about the diameter of a quarter, and I can't really tell how deep. My dog, who is a hunter with a very strong nose, pays not attention to them so I doubt that they are rodents. Is it possible for yard holes to be caused by drainage issues? I live in a neighborhood that is notorious for drainage problems, flooded basements, etc.

sacadas and the 17 year locusts.. they come out of holes in the ground

The holes sound like they are made from moles or voles. If your dog is not out at night, he may not care about them. We had a problem with them in Connecticut and I got rid of them using strips of juicy fruit gum in the holes. It evidently 'gums' up their intestinal tract and they die under the ground, already buried.
I know you don't think they are rodents, but it sounds like snakes, definitely. I know what snake wholes look like and I can identify them anywhere. We have snake wholes, and my dog (she's a Beagle... and beagles are hunters) and she doesn't pay any attention to them because she knows it's impossible for her to catch them. Good luck.
Could be craw fish or moles. Check and see if there are any "tracks" leading away from the holes. If so then it would probably be moles. Since it's wet I'll bet it's craw fish.
Cicadas, katie-dids, orhatever you want to call them. This is their year.
