Which is the best type of mulch to use in a perennial bed?

Question:I'm trying to decide between cedar, cypress, pine, and any other hardwood mulch. I do not have access to shredded leaves, and I do not want rock mulch.

The perennial bed will have a path through it, so I'm looking for a mulch that can hold up to some foot traffic, and not get spread all over the patio. The area is approximately 12'x12'.

What should I use?

Answers:
which one do you prefer? buy what you like, as different mulches appeal to different ppl. any of the hard wood mulches are nice and look good.
hope this helps.

I would use no float cypress mulch. You can buy the natural color or the red no float cypress mulch.
I prefer pressure treated cedar, which tends to be free of bugs and weeds.
We are now using a new product here in Australia. Sugar Cane Mulch. It's fantastic. Not for where you are though.

I put this in to give you all an idea of how different it is here. It's incredible for me to read cedar mulch.
