Pond scum...what is it ?

Question:About a week ago I noticed what looked like spittle on the surface of my pond. Now it has multiplied and looks really awful. Can anyone tell me what it is? We have a 40feet by 16 feet pond with a bio-filter and 3 waterfalls.

Answers:
This can be caused by high levels of nitrogen or lowered oxygen in the water, Sometimes overfeeding fish with high protein food, drain-off from lawn/flower bed fertilisers, excessive build up of debris on pond bottom. Algal blooms can appear on the surface of the water, as can varieties of surface floating pond plants, some of these can be very invasive and are carried by birds from pond to pond. Check the bio-filter, identify if plant or algae. Ponds without shade can suffer from this problem, and aeration of water is essential in very hot climates.

Could it be frog eggs? If it has little black dots in it, it is eggs.
The evolutionary precursor to "trailer trash". I'm sorry, sometimes the points don't matter and I can't resist. RScott
