What can I safely plant under my maple tree?
Question:I'd like to landscape under my mature silver maple in northern Illinois. I don't wan't to rob the tree of any water or nutrients, and I understand that trees, if watered, should be watered deeply.
Which of the following is safe to put beneath the tree:
Most anything.
Plants that can accept deep watering.
Plants that don't require watering here, like hostas.
Nothing but mulch.
Something else.
I'd appreciate any info from landscapers or horticulturists.

You shouldn't be worried about the tree, you should be worried about what you plant under the tree. A tree is going to take everything it needs first, leaving very little for anything else. You need to look for low maintenance and drought resistance things. Hostas work for me and annuals will usually make it alright. Keep in mind that you can only add 2" of dirt over the roots of a tree a year. You can add as much mulch over that as you like. Good Luck!
hostas are ur best bet! they look really nice when filled out around the tree! they don't require much water either! just as much as ne other plant! good luck
monkey grass
Go with the hostas - I have for many years and they thrive under my maple tree! Besides they are a perennial and keep coming back year after year! Good luck!
Use the low growing hostas in an outer ring and taller growing elephant ears for an inner ring. They will both like the shade and come back year after year.
Go with Hosta's they are easy to care for.
