I don't know where you live, or what kind of pool places you have in your area, but look for BioGuard distributors...If you happen to live near a Carribean Pools store, they are THE BEST (in the area I live in), but if not, usually BioGuard distributors are pretty knowledgeable about what products you need to maintain your pool. They will usually ask for a sample of your water so that they can tell exactly what your pool needs. They can then give you detailed instructions specifically for your size pool on how to maintain the water throughout the season.

go to the pool store and they will help you...you need many different types of chemicals...some are only once a week..some are twice...some are only needed if you test your water and it shows you need it...they have litmus papers that you swip in the pool that help you also..but your bet would be to go to the pool store because they can explain EVERYTHING to you! they helped me when i bought my pool...
Well 12' x 36' isn't "so" small... assuming you are using chlorine as the sanitizer, I go with simplicity... Once the water is in the pool, and has been shocked for the 1st time, you want to get into the habit of taking readings of the chemicals "daily"! The 3 components that are easily controlled, (and measured), are Chlorine, Ph, and alkalinity...
If you go to a pool place, purchase a very simple, basic test kit that tests those 3 things... (You will want the fancy one with 50 little bottles of chemicals only if your a chemist and you have too much time and money on your hands)! Chlorine is most commonly introduced to residential pools by putting them into a floating chlorine dispenser. You can also drop a 3" puck into the skimmer basket. It will take a while to get a feel for how fast the chlorine dissapates into the air, give it a week or two of taking readings everyday, and keeping track of how much chlorine your using to maintain 3 to 5 ppm.
Ph is controlled (lowered) with muriatic acid. There are various chemicals like "Ph Plus" that will raise the Ph... That should be maintained around 7.2 to 7.8
Alkalinity I think is supposed to be around 100 to 120 ?
You will need to get further advice from a pool pro, but don't let them sell you the store! Remember simple is good! Once you get the water balanced, your daily readings will be your best friend! An occasional dose of algaecide is good too!
You can figure out how many gallons your pool is by multiplying length x width x average depth... That's important to know when it comes to adding chemicals... Good luck!
