Are garlic leaves edible?

Question:How do I identify garlic from onions?

Answers:
Absolutely! When I lived in Japan, my favorite restaurant had a dish that was sauteed garlic shoots (the green part before it turned into the bladed leaves but about the bulb) and mushrooms in a rich brown sauce. Oh my god it was so good.

Thanks! Now I am hungry AND missing Japan.

Garlic is a bulb that when you break off the outer paperlike covering, there are many moon shaped lobes growing vertically inside. An onion is one single bulb. Now if you are wondering what the difference looks like when they are still in the ground, then I can't help you.

Yes they are. They add a little color to what you are cooking.

If you crush or nibble a leaf and it tastes like onion it is onion. If it tastes or smells like garlic it its garlic.

If you can't tell what is growing in the garden take a look in the supermarket at green onions and garlic cloves so you can learn to spot the difference.

Note also there is a chive that looks like a green onion called garlic chives that is popular in Chinese cooking. That is much less common so don't worry about those details there.
Garlic has blade like leaves while onions have tubular leaves.
