Is it possible to grow any of these trees in zone 9. If it is please tell me some tips to growing them.?
Question:Acer Buergeranum, Acer Ginnala, Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum and Acer Palmatum)
Answers:
I live in a zone 9 in Australia, hot and dry temps from 20 deg f to 110 deg f.
Acer Buergeranun grows here no trouble in the full sun and is fairly drought tolerant once established.
Acer Ginnala is hardy and no problem in part shade, with regular watering.
Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum goes well with morning sun only and regular watering.
The green leaved Acer palmatum grows well and more tougher than A. palmatum atropurpureum but still likes only half day sun.
All the fine leaf Acers eg dissectums leaves dry out and look 'tatty', in hot dry winds so must be in a sheltered postion.
I have a beautiful Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' growing in the morning sun next to my house and it grows beautifully, and colours as expected even though we don't get the coldest winters. Acer Buergeranum also colours extremely well.
Acer platanoides will grow with water but get 'tatty' leaves but the Acer negundo's thrive and Acer negundo 'Flamingo' may give you another decorative small tree. Hope this helps.
Acer buergerianium Trident Maple is listed as hardy to zones 8(9) .Well-drained acid soil. Full sun
I know the Ginnala will do fine. The were very popular in southern Ca.
