Was this snake poison?

Question:I live in East Texas and my dog found two snakes in the monkey grass surrounding our patio...they were black, mottled colored with a very yellow belly. Both were about 3 feet long, about big around as a silver dollar, with a pointy tail and a blunt nose. Any ideas what kind, are they poison? My little dog wrestled it until I could get them apart, but was not bitten.

Answers:
The description you give sounds like your snake was a cotton mouth. They are black with yellow bellies. They are called "cotton mouths" because the inside of their mouths are white.
These snakes are found in pairs many times. You are very lucky you or your dog did not get bit. These snakes are very poisonous and very aggressive. They will sometimes chase you.

yes they were they are either cottonmouths or land mocassins and yes they are very poisonous and I would not let your dog out to play untill i had a extermintor come to my house and put down something to ward off snakes . My mom had them come out and they put something down as my mom does not want to get bitten or her dogs she has little dogs too . good luck and i hope i helped.
