What is the right mix for hummingbird food?

Question:I have two feeders that are red already, so I don't want to add dye, I just need to know how much water to sugar ratio.

Answers:
The proper solution should consist of 1 part of sugar and 4 parts of water. Honey or juice may be dangerous for these creatures; color supplements are toxic.

My mother in law makes red kool-aid and put in her feeders.

Actually I just answered this same question a little over a month ago and got the best answer.

4 cups of boiled water, add 1 cup sugar. No food coloring!
Dye is BAD for hummingbirds - you are right to not use it.

The ratio is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Dissolve the sugar in the warmed water, cool before putting out. Refrigerate the excess, and toss after a week.
buy your mix @ a lawn center or dept store. when you use homemade varieties you are endangering the eggs laid, makes the shells soft and takes away the next generation.
ask around and verify if you would like.
PLEASE go with James!
Four parts water to one part sugar. Not necessary to boil, just heat enough to dissolve sugar. Bacteria grows in the solution in the feeders from the bacteria occuring on the hummers' beaks and tongues. Change solution frequently in hotter weather. No dyes, artificial sweeteners, honey, or Koolaid. Just 100% pure white cane sugar and tap water.
