Big mosquito problem, what can I do?
Question:I live in an area very close to a little creek, and there are lots of mosquitos, even in the middle of winter! Besides from those scented candles, is there something that will keep them away? I have a great entertaining area that I would love to use!
Answers:
off lanterns with power pads they really work and cover a 15x15 ft area. I took 2 camping with me and my family laughed this campsite was by a creek and it was also somewhat breezy so i was worried they wouldn't work but it really did make sure you put them up wind. the only draw back is the cost the refills $5 have 3 pads ( each pad only gives you 4 hrs of protection )12 hrs tot. I think it's worth it I have enjoyed many bite free nights since i've started using them.

And make sure you drain any standing water around your property, if possible.
They are attracted to large warm objects, like us.
There is a special gas unit with a heater and vacuum that is supposed to do well.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as one of the scented candles that you don't want, but I used theThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Lantern at my last outside bon-fire gathering and it worked wonders. I also live by a creek and know how just a few bugs can ruin an entire evening of fun!
You can also try lawn sprays like the mosquito barrier! Good luck!
You can spray insect fog in area prior to use; spray with the wind. Also, use electric bug zappers but make sure the zappers are at least 6-10' away from the people. Keep the candles too.
There are tons of things you can do.
1. Candles (which you already have)
2. Smoke. Any kind. These suckers hate smoke
3. Slight wind. One thing about these mosquitoes is that they all hate wind. Hate it! Put a little fan out. there.
4. Lemon grass creams
5. Nets
6. Garlic pills. Eat them a week before you will be out
Lemon Grass is a Vietnamese herb / weed that does wonders in all things mosquitoes
Mosquito's breed in standing stagnant water. If your creek is flowing it is not directly the problem. Wander around your property and empty everything you can that has a little puddle of water in it. If you can't empty it there are "donuts" you can buy and float in anything you can't empty. Then walk over toward the creek, note any "boggy" or "swampy" areas and if you can (if they are on your property) fill them if they are small, or float the donuts if not.
You can use natural means to clear them some from your entertaining area. Mint is a natural deterrent and flying insect killer. It smells a whole lot better than citronella but doesn't work as well. You can get mint oil and either put it on some candles or on light bulbs. There are plants that insects don't like also, marigold is one I can think of.
If the boggy/swampy area is near but not on your land and you can see the mosquito's are really coming from there talk to the land owner or call the city/county, both or one will be interested in controlling the mosquito's to control possible west nile virus outbreaks.
Oh, and they are attracted to dark colors. Wear light clothing.
Put up a bat house. I live in an area with a swampy pond. Some of us have put up bat houses and this has kept the mosquitoes down.
mosquitos dont like winds. add fans where you are at and place a bug lite, bug zapper down wind. This should take care of them. Be sure to get rid of any standing water area in your yard. They like them too.
