Watering new Barberry shrubs?

Question:My new Barberry shrubs were in sand in the pots from Home Depot. I planted them in the ground without shaking off this sand to expose the roots. It seems that no matter how much I water them, they are not absorbing water.. Should I remove the sand and replant them in better soil, or water more until they respond?

Answers:
Are they wilty? Is this why you think they need more water? Barberries prefer extremely dry soil, which is why most of them are kept in a sandy soil rather than in a moisture retaining mix.

Cut them back, let them dry out and see if they don't perk up. Your ground is holding more water than you think and you may be loving them to death!

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

From my experience, Barberry plants love sandy soil and thrive in dry climate. I never water mine (except for the rainfall) and they are beautiful.
I planted some 6" Crimson Barberry plants this spring. I have sandy soil. I water them a lot. They seem to love it. They are doing quite nicely. I did use a bit of a general use fertilizer on them.
