Why do some people put a gallon milk jug full of water out in their garden?

There are many reasons but the cat dog thing is news to me. Upside down they are waters. Right side up they are used as shelter from the wind and sun. Filled with water they also trap heat during the day and release heat at night. This effect can be maximized by tinting the water a dark color with food dye. A new twist is to tint the water red to increase tomato production. I often use three jugs with a piece of slate on top to shade and shelter young tender transplants. You can mix and match jugs as waters or heat sinks depending on conditions. With the bottoms cut out they make great little 'cloches'. RScott

cats and dogs wont pee in your garden if they see them...true!!
Im not sure but I think it could be to put calcium in the soil and maybe other nutrients,

Hope this helps.
People are stupid and think that it will stop dogs and cats from peeing or pooping in their yard. It doesn't work. They think that if the dog sees themselves they won't poop. My dog doesn't know who he is.. and he has no problem going when other dogs are around... so go figure why people think it would work..

In most cases it is used to slow water the intended plant that is to be watered. Make a few
small holes on the bottom (about the size of a a paper clip)of the milk jug.fill with water as needed. This will slowly water your plant.
This can also be a way to add liquid fertilizer to your plant as well. I use Miracle Grow Brand.
They put a small hole in the bottom. Waters the plant slow and keeps the ground moist. Works good for some moisture sensitive plants also they may put plant food in the water.
Large jugs, even an old bucket, are used for slow watering of an individual plant. It is most useful for watering a recently planted small tree. With small hole in the bottom, it allows a slow drip to the plant, therefore the water soaks into the ground to the roots instead of running off.
