Cintronella plants will repel moquitos - but only in the very immediate vicinity. If you're standing a few feet away from the plant, the attraction to your exhalation (they detect concentrations of carbon dioxide to zero in on mammals for their bloodmeals) will win out over the repellant qualities of the plant.
Make sure there are no places with standing water around your house, to lessen the chances of their breeding on your property.
I plant mint to rid the yard of mosquito's. It smell great and looks
really good in planters and great for rock gardens.

Marigolds do repel some insects. That in addition to being edible make it a good reason for growing them. Unfortunately the smell may also repel some humans.
